MG HS Common Problems & What to Watch

The HS does family duty at an MG price, with known quantities to manage: dual-clutch low-speed shudder reports on earlier cars (fluid and calibration are the levers), turbos that demand on-time oil, ADAS that needs recalibration after windscreen work, and on the plug-in hybrid a petrol engine that must not be forgotten just because the commute is electric.

How booking works: booking online to find out what’s wrong is our $374 incl. GST pre-paid diagnostic — a dedicated two-hour diagnostic booking plus a written report, not a free quote, and it applies even if we find the likely fault sooner. Any repair is quoted separately in writing before we start. Booking a service or already know the work you want? Call 03 8782 0711 or pick that service in the booking form instead.

About the MG HS

First and second-generation HS SUVs are now common family transport across the south-east, petrols and plug-ins both. The petrol’s DCT and the PHEV’s dual-nature engine are where informed servicing earns its keep.

Neither drivetrain is fragile. Both have one non-negotiable line in the schedule, and we make sure it never slips.

The MG HS watch-list

DCT shudder and its levers

Owner reports of low-speed shudder on earlier HS petrols track two causes: fluid past its best and superseded calibration. Fresh fluid on the true interval plus current software resolves most cases; what remains is diagnosable, not mysterious.

Turbo oil discipline

Both HS turbo engines follow the universal rule — correct-spec oil on time. The engines that suffer are the ones on stretched intervals.

PHEV: the forgotten engine

Electric commuting can leave the petrol side barely used — moisture and fuel dilute its oil regardless. Calendar-based servicing protects the engine you are not using.

ADAS after glass work

Camera-based lane keeping needs recalibration after a windscreen replacement; skipping it leaves the systems guessing. If your HS pulls or nags after new glass, that is the reason.

Family brakes and tyres

The usual loaded-SUV truths: pads wear unevenly on school duty, tyres square off, both are caught cheaply by inspection at each service.

Servicing your MG HS & keeping the warranty

You don’t need the dealer to protect a new-car warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, servicing by a qualified workshop, done to the manufacturer’s schedule with appropriate-quality parts, protects your rights — the manufacturer generally can’t refuse MG warranty cover just because an independent did the servicing, though damage caused by incorrect servicing or the wrong parts wouldn’t be covered. We use the correct parts, stamp the logbook and keep the records that prove every service was done right. With us, logbook servicing starts at $299 incl. GST, and the exact price is fixed in writing before any work starts.

FAQ

MG HS Common Problems — FAQ

No — it should put you off skipping its fluid service. Maintained and updated, the gearbox does the family job fine.

The opposite: barely-used engines need the calendar interval most. Oil collects what short runs leave behind, and time — not kilometres — is the trigger.
