LDV D90 Common Problems & What to Watch

The D90 delivers seven-seat 4WD metal for the money, and its watch-list is classic modern diesel: a DPF that hates the school run, EGR soot accumulating on short-trip duty, transmission services that owners skip because nobody told them, a service-reminder system with its own reset procedure, and underbody care after towing or gravel.

How booking works: booking online to find out what’s wrong is our $374 incl. GST pre-paid diagnostic — a dedicated two-hour diagnostic booking plus a written report, not a free quote, and it applies even if we find the likely fault sooner. Any repair is quoted separately in writing before we start. Booking a service or already know the work you want? Call 03 8782 0711 or pick that service in the booking form instead.

About the LDV D90

The D90 does the big-family, big-trailer job around Cranbourne at a price the big names cannot match. The engineering is conventional diesel 4WD — which means its needs are conventional too, just non-negotiable.

Most D90 grief we see traces to duty-cycle mismatch: a highway-bred diesel doing five-kilometre hops. Managed honestly, the same car thrives.

The LDV D90 watch-list

DPF versus the school run

Short trips never complete regeneration, soot accumulates, and the D90 eventually protests. A real weekly highway run is the free fix; where life will not allow it, we monitor soot load and run forced regenerations at service before limp mode makes the decision.

EGR and intake soot

Exhaust recirculation slowly coats the intake on short-trip diesels. Kept in check at service it stays a maintenance item; ignored for years it becomes a cleaning job with a real invoice.

The transmission service nobody mentions

The automatic has a genuine fluid interval — sooner under towing — that too many D90s never receive. Fluid condition checked and changed on time is the difference between a long-lived box and a rebuild conversation.

Service reminders and resets

The D90’s reminder system needs correct resetting after each service, and owners regularly arrive confused by warnings a previous service never cleared. We reset it properly and show you what was done.

After the trailer and the gravel

Towing wears brakes and cooks fluids; gravel roads sandblast the underbody. Tell us how the car lives and the inspection follows the duty, not just the checklist.

Servicing your LDV D90 & keeping the warranty

You don’t need the dealer to protect a new-car warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, servicing by a qualified workshop, done to the manufacturer’s schedule with appropriate-quality parts, protects your rights — the manufacturer generally can’t refuse LDV warranty cover just because an independent did the servicing, though damage caused by incorrect servicing or the wrong parts wouldn’t be covered. We use the correct parts, stamp the logbook and keep the records that prove every service was done right. With us, logbook servicing starts at $299 incl. GST for diesel utes and 4WDs, and the exact price is fixed in writing before any work starts.
