Mercedes Warning Lights Explained
What does that light on your Mercedes mean – and is it safe to drive? A Cranbourne West Mercedes specialist explains the key dashboard warning lights, which are urgent, and what to do.

Red vs yellow: the first thing to understand
Before decoding individual symbols, learn the colour code, because it tells you how worried to be. A red warning light means stop or act now – it signals a serious problem that can damage the car or be a safety risk. A yellow or amber light means caution – something needs attention soon, but you can usually drive gently to get it checked. A green or blue light is just information (a system is on). When in doubt, a red light is your cue to pull over safely; a yellow one is your cue to book a diagnostic promptly.
Check engine light (the engine symbol)
The amber engine outline is the one people see most. Steady, with the car driving normally, it means a fault has been stored – drive gently and book a diagnostic soon. Flashing means a more serious misfire that can damage the catalytic converter – ease off and get it seen quickly. It can be triggered by anything from a loose fuel cap to a sensor or ignition fault, so the only way to know is to read the code with Mercedes-level equipment. See our check-engine light guide for more.
Brake warning light
A red brake light usually means one of three things: the handbrake is still on, the brake fluid is low, or there is a brake-system fault. Check the handbrake first. If it stays on with the handbrake off, low fluid often means worn brake pads or a leak – either way it is a safety issue. Do not ignore a brake warning; have the brakes inspected before driving far. Worn brakes are also a guaranteed roadworthy failure.
ABS and ESP lights
The ABS light means the anti-lock braking system has flagged a fault – your normal brakes still work, but the anti-lock function may not help you in an emergency stop. The ESP (stability control) light, if it stays on, means the traction and stability system has a fault. Both are safety systems worth diagnosing promptly. If the ESP light merely flashes briefly while driving on a slippery road, that is the system working, not a fault.
Battery / charging light
A red battery symbol does not mean ‘low battery’ – it means the charging system is not charging properly, usually an alternator or drive-belt issue. The car is running on battery reserve and will eventually stop. If this light comes on while driving, reduce electrical load (heater, etc.) and head somewhere safe to get it checked rather than risk being stranded. See our battery and charging guide.
Coolant temperature warning
A red temperature light (or a gauge in the red) means the engine is overheating – one of the few lights that means stop now. Continuing to drive an overheating engine risks severe, expensive damage. Safely pull over, switch off, and let it cool; do not open the cooling system hot. Causes include low coolant, a leak, a failed thermostat or water pump. Have it recovered or checked rather than pushing on – overheating is not worth the gamble.
Oil pressure warning
The red oil-can symbol is a stop-immediately light. It means oil pressure has dropped to a level that can destroy the engine in minutes through lack of lubrication. If it comes on, pull over safely and switch off as soon as you can – do not ‘just get home’. It may be a low oil level or a more serious fault, but the engine cannot be risked. This is one light you never drive on.
Tyre pressure (TPMS)
The amber symbol that looks like a cross-section of a tyre with an exclamation mark is the tyre-pressure monitor. It means one or more tyres is significantly low – check and inflate them, and look for a puncture. Low pressure affects handling, braking and tyre life, and a slow leak will get worse. It is usually a simple fix, but worth acting on quickly, especially before a longer drive.
SRS / airbag light
The SRS or airbag warning means the supplementary restraint system has detected a fault, and the airbags or seatbelt pretensioners may not deploy correctly in a crash. It is a safety system you want working, so it should be diagnosed – the cause can be anything from a seat-sensor connector to a clock-spring fault. It is also a roadworthy item. We read the SRS module to find the exact fault rather than clearing the light and hoping.
The ‘service due’ (ASSYST) indicator – not a fault
Not every message is a warning. Mercedes’ ASSYST system displays a spanner symbol and a countdown telling you a service is due (and whether it is an A or B service). That is a maintenance reminder, not a fault – but it is worth acting on, because on-time servicing is what prevents the warning lights above. We carry out ASSYST A and B servicing and reset the indicator correctly with Mercedes-level equipment. Learn more on our Mercedes service interval guide.
