Dashboard Warning Lights: What the Colours Mean
Red, amber or green — dashboard warning lights have a colour code. A Cranbourne West specialist explains.
The colour code
Red means stop — a serious issue (oil pressure, temperature, brakes, charging) that can cause damage or danger; pull over safely and get help. Amber/orange means caution — something needs attention soon (check engine, ABS, traction) but you can usually drive gently to get it checked.
Green/blue are just information (lights on, cruise active) — nothing’s wrong.
What to do
For a red light, don’t keep driving — oil-pressure or temperature warnings especially can destroy an engine in minutes. For an amber light, book a diagnostic soon; it won’t usually fix itself.
Not sure what a light means? We can scan it and tell you exactly what’s going on — see our individual warning-light guides too.
