BYD Seal Common Problems & What to Watch
The Seal is the BYD that converted the sceptics, and most of what owners raise with us is wear, not faults: quick rear tyre wear on Performance versions, a firm ride that finds our rougher roads and occasionally a suspension knock worth inspecting, brake discs rusting under regen-heavy driving, and the usual new-energy 12-volt battery habits.
How booking works: booking online to find out what’s wrong is our $374 incl. GST pre-paid diagnostic — a dedicated two-hour diagnostic booking plus a written report, not a free quote, and it applies even if we find the likely fault sooner. Any repair is quoted separately in writing before we start. Booking a service or already know the work you want? Call 03 8782 0711 or pick that service in the booking form instead.

About the BYD Seal
The Seal is a genuinely quick sedan — the Performance version especially — and quick, heavy cars are consumable-hungry regardless of badge. Tyres, alignment and honest brake inspection are where Seal money goes.
The drivetrain itself has been solid. Our job at service time is the written health check: battery report, tyre wear pattern, disc condition, coolant circuits, and the 12-volt under load. Flat $400 incl. GST, report in writing.
The BYD Seal watch-list
Tyres: the Seal’s real running cost
Dual-motor cars put serious torque through sticky rubber. Uneven inner-edge wear also shows up when alignment drifts. Rotate on schedule, align when wear says so, and treat tyre budget as part of ownership — we report tread at every service.
Suspension knocks on rough roads
A firm sports setup plus south-east Melbourne’s patchier streets means some owners report a knock or clunk over sharp bumps. Often it is a sway-bar link or bush — small parts, quick to confirm on a hoist, and worth recording early under warranty.
Discs rust while the pads last forever
Strong regen means light friction-brake use. Surface rust, lips on the disc edge and lazy sliders are what a proper inspection catches; pad thickness alone tells you almost nothing on this car.
12-volt battery and sleep habits
Sentinel-style features and apps keep modules awake. If the car sits, or you run camera features hard, the 12-volt works harder than the spec sheet suggests — test under load each service.
Software updates change the car
Regen strength, throttle mapping and ADAS behaviour genuinely shift with updates. Note what changed and when; it saves chasing phantom faults.
Servicing your BYD Seal & keeping the warranty
You don’t need the dealer to protect a new-car warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, servicing by a qualified workshop, done to the manufacturer’s schedule with appropriate-quality parts, protects your rights — the manufacturer generally can’t refuse BYD warranty cover just because an independent did the servicing, though damage caused by incorrect servicing or the wrong parts wouldn’t be covered. We use the correct parts, stamp the logbook and keep the records that prove every service was done right. With us, EV service is a flat $400 incl. GST, and the exact price is fixed in writing before any work starts.

BYD Seal Common Problems — FAQ
Driven enthusiastically, dual-motor Seals can need rears well before 30,000 km. Rotation and alignment stretch it; we track wear at every service so you are never ambushed.
The Seal is firm by design, but a distinct knock over bumps is not. Sway-bar links and bushes are the usual suspects and are quick to confirm.
A flat $400 incl. GST EV service: written report of the EV checks, brakes inspected properly, tyres measured and rotated as needed, coolant circuits, cabin filter, 12-volt tested — all in writing.
No — Australian Consumer Law protects qualified independent servicing to the manufacturer’s schedule with appropriate-quality parts. We stamp the book.
