BYD Dolphin Common Problems & What to Watch
The Dolphin is the cheap-to-run city EV done properly, and its issues list is short. What actually comes up: the 12-volt battery flattening on cars that sit, brake discs rusting because regen does everything in traffic, the odd infotainment freeze cured by updates, and keeping its LFP battery balanced with regular full charges.
How booking works: booking online to find out what’s wrong is our $374 incl. GST pre-paid diagnostic — a dedicated two-hour diagnostic booking plus a written report, not a free quote, and it applies even if we find the likely fault sooner. Any repair is quoted separately in writing before we start. Booking a service or already know the work you want? Call 03 8782 0711 or pick that service in the booking form instead.

About the BYD Dolphin
As a city runabout the Dolphin barely touches its friction brakes and rarely stresses its drivetrain — which is exactly the usage pattern that produces rusty discs and a lazy 12-volt rather than mechanical wear.
Servicing one is quick and cheap by design; the value is in doing the inspection honestly. Ours is a flat $400 incl. GST with a written report of the EV system checks, brakes, tyres and the systems the city never tests.
The BYD Dolphin watch-list
City use rusts the brakes
Stop-start traffic on regen means friction brakes that barely move. Surface rust, edge lips and sticky sliders build quietly; a few deliberate firm stops each week plus proper inspection keeps them healthy.
The 12-volt is the weak link
The Dolphin’s high-voltage pack will outlast everything, but the small 12-volt that wakes the car has ordinary limits — especially on cars parked for days. Load-test each service, replace on condition.
LFP charging habits
The Blade LFP pack likes regular 100% balance charges — BYD’s own advice. A wandering range estimate is usually a balancing matter, not a failing battery.
Infotainment moments
Freezes and Bluetooth sulks show up occasionally and are software, not hardware. Update, reboot, and only then worry.
Tyres still wear like an EV’s
Even a modest EV carries battery weight and delivers instant torque. Rotation on schedule keeps the small tyre bill small.
Servicing your BYD Dolphin & keeping the warranty
You don’t need the dealer to protect a new-car warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, servicing by a qualified workshop, done to the manufacturer’s schedule with appropriate-quality parts, protects your rights — the manufacturer generally can’t refuse BYD warranty cover just because an independent did the servicing, though damage caused by incorrect servicing or the wrong parts wouldn’t be covered. We use the correct parts, stamp the logbook and keep the records that prove every service was done right. With us, EV service is a flat $400 incl. GST, and the exact price is fixed in writing before any work starts.
