What a Toyota HiLux Service Really Costs
Toyota services the HiLux every 6 months or 10,000km — whichever comes first. That’s two visits a year, every year, and it’s the part most owners don’t do the maths on. Here’s the honest arithmetic, what happens when your capped price runs out, and what we charge: from $299 incl. GST per visit.
RACV AccreditedTwo visits a year, not one
Nearly every other ute on the road runs a 12-month or 15,000km service interval. The HiLux doesn’t. Toyota specifies 6 months or 10,000km, and for most owners the 6-month clock lands first — you only need to be doing about 20,000km a year for kilometres to be the trigger instead.
That changes the sum completely. A capped-price figure that looks cheap per visit is being paid twice as often:
| Per visit | Visits per year | Per year | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota dealer — last widely published capped price (2023) | $245 petrol / $290 diesel | 2 | $490–$580 |
| Toyota dealer — industry reporting, mid-2026 | around $395 | 2 | around $790 |
| StarTech Prestige | from $299 | 2 | from $598 |
Toyota last widely published HiLux capped pricing at $245 (petrol) and $290 (diesel) per visit back in 2023, and has revised it since. Motoring press reporting in June 2026 put HiLux servicing at roughly $3,950 across five years — about $395 a visit. Toyota doesn’t publish these figures openly — the current number lives in their Service Pricing Calculator and the myToyota app, and needs your rego or VIN. The 2026 HiLux is also a new generation (on sale December 2025), so the older schedule has almost certainly been reset. Check the current number for your ute before comparing. Our price is a starting figure; your exact number is confirmed in writing before we start.
Where that leaves you
On the 2023 figures we were line-ball to slightly dearer. On the 2026 figures we are meaningfully cheaper — roughly $190 a year. We’re showing you both rather than quoting whichever one flatters us, because you can check them.
While it’s still capped, the dealer is a fair choice
If your HiLux is inside its capped-price period and price per visit is the only thing that matters to you, Toyota’s number is competitive and we’re not going to pretend otherwise to win a booking. What we’d put to you is what happens after that.
What we’d actually put to you is this: the capped-price period ends, and that’s when the sum changes.
What happens at 3 years
Toyota’s capped-price servicing on the HiLux covers a fixed run of scheduled services — commonly the first 3 years or 6 services, whichever comes first. After that, the cap is gone. There is no published ceiling on what the next service costs, and dealer servicing on an out-of-warranty ute is where the numbers tend to move.
That’s the point most HiLux owners start searching, and it’s the point where an independent workshop is straightforwardly the better deal:
- Our price doesn’t expire. From $299 a visit is what we charge on a 3-year-old HiLux and a 12-year-old one. There’s no cliff.
- Out of warranty means genuine parts are your choice, not a condition. We’ll fit genuine if you want genuine. We’ll fit quality OEM-equivalent if you’d rather save the money. You decide, and we tell you what the difference actually is.
- Older utes need judgement, not a checklist. A 200,000km HiLux has different priorities to the schedule Toyota wrote for a new one. We service to how yours is actually used.
And while it’s still under warranty
You do not have to use a Toyota dealer to keep your new-car warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law you can have scheduled servicing done by any qualified independent workshop, provided the correct scheduled work is carried out to specification and the logbook is stamped. That’s exactly what we do — correct-specification oil and filters, every item on the schedule for that interval, logbook stamped every time.
What we won’t tell you to do is stretch the interval. Some workshops will quietly suggest servicing a HiLux annually instead of 6-monthly to halve your bill. If your ute is under warranty that puts the warranty at risk, and on a hard-worked turbo-diesel it’s poor advice regardless. Toyota set 6 months for a reason — short suburban runs, dust, and towing are hard on oil.

What’s in a HiLux service here
The scheduled items for your interval, done properly — engine oil to Toyota specification and a new oil filter, the filters and fluids that fall due at that interval, a full brake and tyre check, suspension and steering inspection, battery and cooling-system check, road test, and your logbook stamped.
On top of the checklist, these are the things we actually watch on a HiLux, because they’re what turns a cheap service into an expensive one later:
- DPF status. HiLuxes doing short suburban runs often never complete a burn cycle, so soot builds up. We check it every service and clean it before it becomes a replacement.
- Injector seals and intake carbon. The 1GD-FTV is known for injector seal weep and carbon build-up. Caught early these are cheap. Ignored, they are not.
- Towing and tray loads. If yours tows or carries weight, brakes, coolant and transmission fluid wear faster than the book assumes. We check them against how you actually use it.
Anything we find beyond the scheduled service is quoted in writing and approved by you before we touch it. If it can wait, we’ll tell you it can wait.
HiLux Service Cost — FAQ
How often does a Toyota HiLux need servicing?
Every 6 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first. For most owners the 6-month interval arrives first — you need to be covering roughly 20,000km a year before kilometres become the trigger.
How much does a HiLux service cost?
Toyota last widely published $245 (petrol) and $290 (diesel) per visit in 2023; motoring press reporting in mid-2026 puts it nearer $395 a visit, or about $790 a year across the two visits. Ours starts at $299 incl. GST per visit — about $598 a year — with the exact figure confirmed in writing before we start. Check the current dealer number for your ute, as Toyota revises it.
Can I service my HiLux once a year instead?
Not without consequences. If the ute is under warranty, missing scheduled services puts that warranty at risk. Even out of warranty, 6-monthly oil changes are what a hard-worked turbo-diesel needs — particularly one doing short trips or towing. We won’t recommend stretching it.
Will servicing outside a Toyota dealer void my warranty?
No. Under Australian Consumer Law you can have scheduled servicing done by any qualified independent workshop, as long as the correct work is carried out to specification and the logbook is stamped. We do both.
What happens when Toyota capped-price servicing ends?
Capped price typically covers the first 3 years or 6 services. After that there is no published ceiling on dealer pricing. Our price doesn’t change with the age of the ute — it’s the same from $299 whether yours is three years old or twelve.
Do you service older HiLux models?
Yes — every generation, including the 2.4L and 3.0L D-4D as well as the current 2.8L 1GD-FTV.
Where are you?
8B Universal Way, Cranbourne West VIC 3977 — we look after HiLux owners across Cranbourne, Clyde North, Botanic Ridge, Lynbrook, Hampton Park, Narre Warren and Berwick.
