Commuter cars and what high kilometres really mean

Lynbrook has its own station and a lot of households running a car hard on the highway. That produces a particular kind of used car: high kilometres, but gentle ones. A car that has done its distance at a steady speed is often in better shape than a low-kilometre car that never got warm on short suburban trips.

So we do not read the odometer as a verdict. We look at what the kilometres were made of: service intervals against actual distance, transmission and cooling system condition, suspension and bush wear, and tyre age against tread. Intermittent faults that only turn up under load need the optional scan-tool scan, $100 extra — a separate charge, not part of the RACV inspection or its mechanical guarantee. Should I avoid a car with over 200,000 kilometres?

Not automatically. How the distance was accumulated and how consistently it was serviced matter more than the number. Some high-kilometre highway cars are in better condition than low-kilometre short-trip ones.
