One thing worth clarifying: RACV doesn’t carry out the inspection itself. It accredits workshops that meet its standards and lists them as RACV-Accredited Auto Care Centres — the actual work is always done by the workshop you pick. We’re accredited, and our own team handles every Carrum Downs booking directly.

Ex-work utes and vans: what we look at first

Carrum Downs mixes housing with a large light-industrial area, and a good share of the vehicles sold around there have worked for a living. A work ute is not automatically a bad buy — many are serviced on time because a business depends on them — but they wear differently to a family car, and the odometer tells you less than it does on a commuter.

On a work vehicle we look hard at what the job did to it: towing and load history, clutch or transmission wear, suspension and bushes, chassis and underbody condition, and whether a tow bar, tray or fit-out was installed properly. Carrum Downs is roughly 10 minutes up the Western Port Highway from us, and the same trip covers Skye. Mobile is $460 incl. GST, flat.

Is a high-kilometre work ute worth inspecting?

Usually more worth it than a low-kilometre one. The question is not the number but what the kilometres were spent doing, and whether the servicing kept up with it.

Can you check a tow bar or tray fit-out?

We report on the condition and on obvious installation problems we can see. We are not certifying a towing capacity or an engineering approval — if that matters to you, ask the seller for the paperwork.
