How to get rid of a musty smell in your car’s air-con
A few habits slow it down. None of them reach the evaporator core, which is where a musty smell actually starts.
Home steps that genuinely help
Run the fan with the air-con off before you park. A few minutes of fan-only airflow before you switch off dries the evaporator instead of leaving it cold and wet overnight. It is the single most useful habit for slowing a musty smell down.
Replace the cabin (pollen) filter on schedule. A clogged filter traps moisture against the evaporator and holds it there. It is a cheap part with an outsized effect on the smell, which is why we recommend it alongside any workshop treatment.
Dry out wet carpet. If a leak has left water trapped under the carpet, the musty smell has nothing to do with the air-con at all. Pull the carpet back, dry it properly, and find where the water is getting in.
Check the evaporator drain isn’t blocked. Condensation should drip out from under the car, not pool inside the housing. If you never see a drip on a hot day, the drain may be blocked.
Why a supermarket air-con bomb rarely fixes it
Aerosol “air-con bombs” and cabin fresheners work through the vents and the cabin air. They mask the smell, and sometimes knock back the surface growth they can reach, but the evaporator core sits behind the dash where a can’s spray never lands. The growth that started the smell is usually still there, which is why the smell often returns within days or weeks of using one.
Reaching the evaporator core: our $330 package
Our disinfection and foam evaporator clean applies a cleaning foam to the evaporator core itself, through the drain or vent access, leaves it to dwell against the surface, then drains it away. We finish with an anti-bacterial disinfection of the vents, ducts and evaporator housing. One fixed price: $330 incl. GST.
Evaporator access varies by car. We check it before starting – if the core cannot be reached on your car, we tell you before doing any work and there is no charge.
Cabin filter: not included. We recommend replacing it with this package, because a blocked filter can re-seed the smell soon after – we quote a replacement before we fit it, since the price depends on the car.
When home steps aren’t enough
If the smell is mild and new, the habits above can hold it off for a while. Book the workshop treatment when the smell is strong, keeps coming back after you’ve tried the home steps, or the car has been sitting unused for a stretch – all signs the growth is established on the evaporator core itself, rather than sitting somewhere a spray or better habits can reach.
Musty air-con smell — FAQ
Because it treats the vents and cabin air, not the evaporator core behind the dash where the growth actually starts. It can mask the smell for a while, but the source is usually untouched.
Yes. It dries the evaporator instead of leaving it wet overnight, which slows down the growth that causes the smell. It won’t undo growth that is already established.
It reaches the evaporator core directly: cleaning foam through the drain or vent access, left to dwell and drained, then an anti-bacterial disinfection of the vents, ducts and evaporator housing. $330 incl. GST, fixed.
We recommend it with this package, because a blocked cabin filter can re-seed the smell soon after. It is not included in the $330 – we quote a replacement before we fit it, since the price depends on the car.
No. This is a hygiene treatment for the smell, not a refrigerant service. If your air-con is not cold, that is our separate regas, $250 incl. GST with the leak test first (if the test finds a leak, the $250 still applies, no gas goes in, and the repair is quoted in writing).
