GWM Cannon Common Problems & What to Watch

The Cannon undercuts the big-name utes and mostly holds up. The realistic watch-list: a DPF that clogs on short-trip duty and needs proper highway runs or forced regenerations, driveline clunks that calibration updates have improved, fuel-filter and injector care that cheap diesel makes non-optional, and brakes that work hard in a 2.2-tonne ute.

How booking works: booking online to find out what’s wrong is our $374 incl. GST pre-paid diagnostic — a dedicated two-hour diagnostic booking plus a written report, not a free quote, and it applies even if we find the likely fault sooner. Any repair is quoted separately in writing before we start. Booking a service or already know the work you want? Call 03 8782 0711 or pick that service in the booking form instead.

About the GWM Cannon

Tradie money has noticed the Cannon around Cranbourne’s industrial streets. The diesel itself is conventional and serviceable; its enemies are the same as every modern diesel — soot from short trips and neglected fuel filtration.

A Cannon that tows or carries needs its driveline fluids treated as consumables, not lifetime fills. That is the difference between a workhorse at 200,000 km and a gearbox conversation at 120,000.

The GWM Cannon watch-list

DPF life on short trips

Site-to-site running never gets the exhaust hot enough to regenerate the particulate filter, so it loads up and the car derates or demands attention. A proper weekly highway run helps; where the pattern is unavoidable we monitor soot load and force regenerations at service before limp mode forces the issue.

Driveline clunk and shunt

Early Cannons drew owner reports of clunky low-speed transmission behaviour and transfer-case shunt; calibration updates improved matters considerably. If yours still clunks, current software plus a driveline fluid service is the sequence worth doing before suspecting hardware.

Fuel filtration is not optional

The common-rail injection system lives or dies on clean fuel. Filters changed on time — early when the ute drinks from job-site jerry cans — protect injectors that cost real money.

EGR and intake soot

Like all its rivals, the diesel recirculates exhaust and slowly coats its intake tract in soot, more so on short-trip duty. It is manageable with the right service attention; it is expensive only when ignored for years.

Brakes and suspension under load

Constant load and towing cook brake fluid and wear bushes faster than private use. Fluid tested and changed on time, bushes inspected on the hoist — boring checks that keep a loaded ute predictable.

Servicing your GWM Cannon & keeping the warranty

You don’t need the dealer to protect a new-car warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, servicing by a qualified workshop, done to the manufacturer’s schedule with appropriate-quality parts, protects your rights — the manufacturer generally can’t refuse GWM warranty cover just because an independent did the servicing, though damage caused by incorrect servicing or the wrong parts wouldn’t be covered. We use the correct parts, stamp the logbook and keep the records that prove every service was done right. With us, logbook servicing starts at $299 incl. GST for diesel utes and 4WDs, and the exact price is fixed in writing before any work starts.

FAQ

GWM Cannon Common Problems — FAQ

The ones we see doing real work hold up when the diesel basics are respected: DPF managed, fuel filters on time, driveline fluids actually changed. Skip those and any ute of any badge suffers.

Your driving pattern is not completing regenerations. A monitored forced regen plus a service check of the sensors usually resets the situation, and we can talk honestly about whether the duty cycle suits a DPF diesel.

Logbook servicing starts at $299 incl. GST for diesel utes, fixed in writing before we start. Diagnostics is our $374 pre-paid booking with a written report.

No — Australian Consumer Law protects logbook servicing by a qualified workshop with appropriate-quality parts, on the schedule. Stamped and recorded.
