Geely EX5 Common Problems & What to Watch

The EX5 is new enough that its watch-list is the honest early one: software updates that change how the car behaves (and occasionally startle owners), the 12-volt battery flattening on cars that sit, brake discs rusting under regen-heavy suburban use, tyres wearing ahead of the odometer, and early-build trim niggles worth recording under warranty.

How booking works: booking online to find out what’s wrong is our $374 incl. GST pre-paid diagnostic — a dedicated two-hour diagnostic booking plus a written report, not a free quote, and it applies even if we find the likely fault sooner. Any repair is quoted separately in writing before we start. Booking a service or already know the work you want? Call 03 8782 0711 or pick that service in the booking form instead.

About the EX5

The EX5 is the car that put Geely on Australian shopping lists — a sharply priced electric family SUV that undercut the established EVs the day it landed. The first cars sold in early 2025 are now reaching real service age, and the patterns forming are familiar, manageable EV ones.

The EX5 watch-list

Updates change the car

EX5 software has moved fast, and updates genuinely alter regen strength, charging behaviour and lane-keep judgement. Owners who feel the car “drive differently this week” are usually feeling a version change, not a fault — worth confirming before any diagnostic money is spent.

The 12-volt is the weak link

Like nearly every new-energy car: the high-voltage pack will outlast the decade, while the ordinary 12-volt that wakes the car flattens on cars that sit. Load-tested at every service, replaced on condition, drama avoided.

Discs rust while regen works

Suburban EX5s barely touch their friction brakes. Surface rust, lips and lazy sliders build quietly — a few deliberate firm stops weekly plus honest inspection keeps them healthy and roadworthy-ready.

Tyres carry the torque

Instant torque plus family-SUV weight wears tyres ahead of the odometer, unevenly if alignment drifts. Rotation on schedule, alignment on evidence, tread reported at every service.

Early-build niggles

Some first-run cars show trim rattles, seal squeaks or infotainment sulks. None of it is mechanical; all of it is worth documenting early while warranty claims are easiest.

Servicing your EX5 & keeping the warranty

Under Australian Consumer Law, servicing by a qualified workshop, done to Geely’s schedule with appropriate-quality parts, protects your rights — the manufacturer generally can’t refuse cover just because an independent did the servicing, though damage caused by incorrect servicing or the wrong parts wouldn’t be covered. We stamp the logbook, keep the records, and the EV service is a flat $400 incl. GST with a written report.

FAQ

Geely EX5 — FAQ

Early days — the oldest Australian cars are on their first services — but the drivetrain has been solid and the issues owners actually raise are software behaviour and the universal EV consumables: tyres, discs, 12-volt.

Because updates on this car genuinely alter regen feel, charging logic and driver-assist judgement. Note what updated and when before suspecting a fault — it usually explains the change.

The 12-volt auxiliary battery, almost certainly — the classic new-energy no-start. Quick to test, cheap to replace on condition, and nothing to do with the traction pack.

A flat $400 incl. GST per EV service with a written report. Tyres are the real running cost — rotation on schedule keeps them even.
