BYD Sealion 7 Common Problems & What to Watch
The Sealion 7 is new enough that long-term patterns are still forming, but the early service themes are already familiar BYD territory: rapid rear tyre wear on the powerful rear-drive versions, the 12-volt battery flattening on cars that sit, brake discs rusting under light regen-heavy use, and trim rattles on some early builds that are worth documenting while the car is young.
How booking works: booking online to find out what’s wrong is our $374 incl. GST pre-paid diagnostic — a dedicated two-hour diagnostic booking plus a written report, not a free quote, and it applies even if we find the likely fault sooner. Any repair is quoted separately in writing before we start. Booking a service or already know the work you want? Call 03 8782 0711 or pick that service in the booking form instead.

About the BYD Sealion 7
The Sealion 7 is BYD’s swoopier electric SUV — heavier and considerably quicker than an Atto 3, which changes what wears. The consumables do the suffering on a fast EV: tyres, alignment and brakes need honest inspection more than the drivetrain does.
We see enough BYDs through the workshop now to know the pattern: the cars are mechanically simple, and the value of a service is in the checks — written report of the EV checks, tyre wear and rotation, brake condition, coolant circuits, cabin filter — done properly and written down.
The BYD Sealion 7 watch-list
Rear tyre wear on quick versions
Instant torque through the rear axle eats the inside edges if you enjoy the performance. Rotate on schedule, check alignment the first time wear looks uneven, and budget tyres realistically — we track tread depth at every service so replacement never lands as a surprise.
12-volt battery habits
The car that does everything by app still relies on an ordinary 12-volt battery to wake up. If the Sealion 7 is a second car that sits during the week, have the 12-volt tested at each service and replace it on condition, not after the first no-start morning.
Brakes that rust rather than wear
Strong regen means the friction brakes can go weeks doing very little. Surface rust and sticking sliders — not worn pads — are the realistic Sealion 7 brake issues, and both show up in a proper inspection.
Early-build squeaks and seals
Some early cars have trim rattles or door-seal wind noise. None of it is mechanical, but note it early and have it recorded while the car is deep in warranty.
Software updates change behaviour
Updates genuinely alter regen feel, ADAS behaviour and charging logic. If the car suddenly behaves differently after an update, that is worth a conversation before assuming a fault.
Servicing your BYD Sealion 7 & keeping the warranty
You don’t need the dealer to protect a new-car warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, servicing by a qualified workshop, done to the manufacturer’s schedule with appropriate-quality parts, protects your rights — the manufacturer generally can’t refuse BYD warranty cover just because an independent did the servicing, though damage caused by incorrect servicing or the wrong parts wouldn’t be covered. We use the correct parts, stamp the logbook and keep the records that prove every service was done right. With us, EV service is a flat $400 incl. GST, and the exact price is fixed in writing before any work starts.

BYD Sealion 7 Common Problems — FAQ
The scheduled servicing is simple — EV service is a flat $400 incl. GST with us. The real ownership cost to watch is tyres on the quick rear-drive versions.
Yes — Australian Consumer Law protects servicing by a qualified workshop to the manufacturer’s schedule with appropriate-quality parts. We stamp the logbook and keep the records that prove it.
More than you would think — for the opposite reason to a petrol car. They corrode from lack of use rather than wear from use, so inspection matters even when pad life looks endless.
Follow the BYD schedule — and if you notice uneven tyre wear or a change in how it drives after a software update, come in sooner rather than waiting for the interval.
