The E70 (2007–2013), F15 (2013–2018) and G05 (2018–) X5 are the common ones, in petrol and (very popular) diesel. As a big, heavy, complex SUV, the X5 makes correct servicing essential — but it’s a superb thing when maintained.

Common X5 issues

Cooling systems work hard on the X5 — water pumps, thermostats and plastic components are wear items worth replacing proactively. Oil leaks (valve cover, oil filter housing, on some the transfer case) are common, as is suspension wear given the weight; air-suspension models need their struts checked.

The diesels (e.g. M57/N57) are strong but need correct DPF/EGR and, on some, timing-chain attention. The transfer case and xDrive AWD also benefit from fluid services that are often skipped.
