The 3 Series generations to know

The E90 (2005–2012), F30 (2012–2019) and G20 (2019–) are the ones we see most. All are superb drivers’ cars, and all are reliable if serviced properly — BMW’s condition-based service (CBS) system can lull owners into stretching intervals too far.

Knowing the weak spots for your exact engine and year is the key to buying or owning one cheaply.

Common 3 Series issues

Oil leaks are the headline item — valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets are common across the petrol fours and sixes, and worth fixing before oil drips onto the belt or exhaust. Cooling systems (water pump, thermostat and plastic components) also wear and are best replaced proactively.

On the popular N20/N26 four-cylinder petrols, timing chain components on early examples deserve a check; the diesels (e.g. N47/B47) are strong but need correct servicing for the DPF/EGR and, on some N47s, timing-chain attention. VANOS and electrical niggles round out the list.

What repairs cost — and how to avoid them

Most 3 Series repairs are very manageable when caught early with the right diagnosis. An oil-leak gasket job is routine; an ignored leak that wrecks a belt or overheats the engine is not. We use dealer-level BMW diagnostics (ISTA) to find the real fault rather than throw parts at it.

We service to the correct intervals (not stretched CBS), use the right oil and genuine-quality parts, and give fixed written pricing.

Buying a used 3 Series

A pre-purchase inspection on a 3 Series pays for itself — we check the specific problem areas for that engine and year and give you an honest report before you commit.

Yes, when serviced on time with the right oil and parts. Most problems come from stretched service intervals and deferred repairs.

Oil leaks (valve cover, filter housing), cooling-system wear, timing-chain attention on some engines, and DPF/EGR on diesels.

Not with an independent specialist who catches issues early. We service to correct intervals for well under dealer pricing.

CBS can stretch oil changes further than we’d recommend. We service to sensible intervals to protect the engine.
