What it usually means

Many cars deliberately run the cooling fan (and on turbos, an after-run pump) for a few minutes after a hot drive — that’s protection, not a fault. The warning signs are the fan running every time even after gentle trips, running for very long periods, or draining the battery overnight.

Constant after-run points to genuine overheating, a coolant temp sensor reading high, an airlock — or a fan relay stuck on.

What you should do

Know your car’s normal: occasional after-run on hot days is fine. A change in the pattern is data — get it checked before it’s a flat battery or a cooked engine.
