How to Pass a Roadworthy First Time

What a roadworthy checks

A Victorian roadworthy (RWC) checks the safety-critical items — brakes, tyres, steering and suspension, lights, windscreen and wipers, seatbelts, the body/chassis, and that there are no major fluid leaks. It’s a safety check, not a mechanical condition report.

Knowing what’s checked is half the battle.

Common reasons cars fail

The usual fails are worn tyres (below the tread limit or damaged), worn brakes, blown bulbs, cracked or chipped windscreens in the driver’s line of sight, perished wiper blades, oil or coolant leaks, and worn suspension or steering components.

Many of these are quick and cheap to fix before the test.

Give yourself the best chance

Before booking, check your tyres, lights and wipers, top up washer fluid, and look for any obvious leaks. Better still, have a pre-check or service first so anything marginal is sorted — it’s cheaper than failing and re-booking.
