What it is & what it does

Glow plugs are heating elements in a diesel engine that pre-heat the combustion chambers so the engine starts easily when cold (diesels ignite by compression, not spark, and need heat to start cold). There’s usually one per cylinder.

They’re mainly used for cold starting and briefly after.

Signs of trouble & how we help

Failing glow plugs cause hard cold-starting, white smoke on a cold start, rough running when cold, or a glow-plug warning light. A faulty glow-plug relay/module can also be the cause rather than the plugs.

We test the glow plugs and their control circuit, and replace what’s faulty — carefully, as seized plugs need care.
