Key Won’t Turn in the Ignition: Causes
A key that won’t turn is usually fixable without panic. A Cranbourne West specialist explains.
What it usually means
A key that won’t turn is most often a steering lock binding (the wheel is locked against the key) — wiggle the steering wheel left/right while gently turning the key. Other causes are a worn key or lock barrel, or a seized ignition lock. On push-button cars, a low key-fob battery or a brake/clutch interlock can stop it starting.
If the steering wiggle frees it, the steering lock was the cause.
What you should do
Try the steering-wiggle trick and the spare key first. If it still won’t turn or start, get it diagnosed rather than forcing it (which can break the key or barrel).
We diagnose ignition-lock, key and interlock faults and repair or replace what’s needed.
How we find & fix it
Because the same symptom can have several causes, we use dealer-level diagnostics and a methodical check to pinpoint the real cause — rather than throwing parts at it.
