How to Use a Portable Jump Starter Safely
Portable jump packs are a handy alternative to leads. A Cranbourne West specialist explains how to use one safely.
Using a jump pack
A portable jump starter (lithium pack) jump-starts a flat battery without needing a second car. Connect the red clamp to the battery positive and the black clamp to an unpainted metal earth point (not the battery negative), turn the pack on, then start the car. Remove the clamps in reverse once it’s running.
Follow the pack’s instructions, keep it charged, and never let the clamps touch each other when live.
Important cautions
Modern cars have sensitive electronics — never reverse the clamps, and use a pack rated for your engine size. A car that needs jumping has a flat battery for a reason (an old battery or a charging fault), so get it tested rather than relying on repeated jumps.
We test the battery and charging system and fit the correct battery if yours is on its way out.
