Automatic Transmission Service: Why and How Often
Many drivers are told their auto is “sealed for life” — then it fails. A Cranbourne West specialist explains why automatic transmission servicing matters and how often to do it.
“Sealed for life” — the myth
Automatic transmission fluid does a hard job — lubricating, cooling and transmitting power — and it degrades with heat and use. The “sealed for life” or “fill for life” label often just means the maker doesn’t specify a change, not that the fluid lasts forever.
In practice, fresh fluid at sensible intervals dramatically extends the life of most modern autos.
How often to service an auto
As a general guide, many automatics benefit from a fluid (and where applicable filter) service every 60,000–100,000 km — sooner for towing or hard use. Dual-clutch (DSG/S tronic) gearboxes have their own, more frequent schedule that should never be skipped.
We use the correct fluid specification for your transmission — using the wrong fluid can cause more harm than no change.
Signs your transmission needs attention
Harsh, delayed or slipping shifts, shuddering, or a transmission warning light all mean it’s worth checking sooner rather than later. Servicing is far cheaper than a rebuild.
