Is Premium Diesel Worth the Extra Cents?
Premium diesel promises cleaner injectors for ~5–10c/L more. A Cranbourne West specialist weighs it.
What premium diesel actually is
Unlike petrol’s octane tiers, diesel has one combustion spec — premium diesel is standard diesel with an additive package: detergents to keep injectors clean, lubricity improvers, anti-foam and sometimes cetane improvers. The base fuel is the same.
So the question is purely whether the additives earn their cents.
Our honest read
Modern common-rail injectors run at extreme pressures with microscopic tolerances — deposits genuinely degrade them, and injector replacement is expensive. A tank of premium periodically (or its equivalent, a quality injector-cleaner additive used correctly) is cheap insurance, especially on direct-injection diesels doing hard or short-trip work. Running it exclusively is a luxury, not a necessity.
What it won’t do: fix existing injector faults, clean a DPF, or compensate for skipped servicing.

Is Premium Diesel Worth the Extra Cents? — FAQ
Same base fuel plus additives — injector detergents, lubricity and anti-foam. There’s no diesel “octane” tier.
Periodically, yes — cheap insurance for expensive common-rail injectors, especially on hard-worked or short-trip diesels. Exclusively is a luxury.
No — existing injector or DPF problems need diagnosis, not fuel choice.
A quality injector cleaner used per directions achieves similar detergency — we can recommend one.
