How to Keep Your Diesel’s DPF Healthy

DPF problems are mostly preventable with the right driving habits. A Cranbourne West diesel specialist explains.

The habits that prevent blockages

The DPF cleans itself by burning off soot (“regeneration”) — but only when the exhaust gets hot enough, which short suburban trips never allow. The single best habit: a 20–30 minute highway run every couple of weeks lets regeneration complete.

If you notice the engine idling higher, a hot smell or the fan running after a drive, a regen may be in progress — don’t switch off mid-way if you can avoid it; finish the drive.

The servicing side

The correct low-ash (low-SAPS) engine oil matters enormously — the wrong oil literally clogs the DPF with ash it can’t burn off. On-time servicing, healthy injectors and a sound EGR system all reduce the soot load in the first place.

If a DPF light appears, act early — a filter caught soon can usually be regenerated or cleaned; one ignored needs costly replacement. Honestly: if nearly all your driving is short trips, a modern diesel may be the wrong tool, and we’ll tell you so.
