What it usually means
A rhythmic flutter or thwack that speeds up with fan speed is something in the blower — a leaf or debris past the intake, occasionally evidence of a rodent’s pantry. A rumble or squeal proportional to fan speed is the blower motor’s bearings ageing. A whistle that changes with vent settings is air forcing past a part-stuck blend door or a clogged, collapsing cabin filter.
Noise only at certain temperature settings implicates the doors; at all settings, the fan itself.
