How to Replace Your Key Fob Battery

A fading fob gives fair warning before it strands you at the car. A Cranbourne West specialist explains the swap.

The warning signs and the swap

Shrinking range (standing at the door before it unlocks), needing second presses, or a key warning on the dash all say the coin cell is dying — typically after 2–4 years. Most fobs split open with a hidden mechanical key or a slot for a coin twist; inside sits a marked coin cell (commonly CR2032 — the number is printed on it).

Note the battery’s orientation before lifting it out, press the new one in the same way, and clip the halves square — forcing a misaligned fob cracks clips.

The catches worth knowing

Some fobs need a re-sync afterwards (often just a button press near the car — handbook has the ritual); keyless-start cars usually keep a backup method (hold the fob against a marked spot on the column or console) if it dies entirely. Cheap no-brand cells fade in months — a quality cell costs a dollar more and lasts years.

A fob that misbehaves on a fresh battery has a different problem — we diagnose keys, remotes and immobiliser faults properly.
