Oil prices vary wildly for the same numbers on the bottle. A Cranbourne West specialist explains what actually matters.
Spec first, brand second
The non-negotiable is the approval your engine specifies (VW 504/507, MB 229.x, BMW LL-04 and so on) — an oil either holds that approval or it doesn’t, and a budget oil with the genuine approval beats a famous brand without it. The grade (5W-30) alone is not the spec.
Where premium oils earn their keep: tighter quality control, better additive packages that keep protecting late in the interval, and proven behaviour in turbo/DI engines that are hard on oil.
Our honest position
On a modern European engine we use quality oils carrying the exact approval — that’s the hill worth dying on. Chasing the most expensive boutique oil adds little; running a no-name oil with a “meets/exceeds” weasel-claim instead of a real approval risks chains, turbos and DPFs.
