What Is a Haldex / AWD Coupling?
The AWD coupling is why your on-demand all-wheel drive works — and why its fluid service matters. A Cranbourne West specialist explains.
What it is & what it does
Most on-demand AWD cars (VW, Audi, Skoda, Volvo and many others) drive the front wheels normally and use an electronically-controlled clutch pack — often a Haldex unit — to send drive rearwards the instant slip is detected.
It has its own oil (and often a filter and pump) with a service interval almost nobody follows.
Signs of trouble & how we help
A neglected coupling gets slow or stops engaging (the car becomes front-drive without telling you dramatically), throws AWD faults, or fails outright — and the tiny pump screen clogging from old fluid is the classic cause. The fluid service is small money; the unit is not.
We service Haldex/AWD couplings with the correct oil and clean the pump screen where fitted.
