What Is a 48V Mild Hybrid System?

Many new European cars are “mild hybrids” — here’s what that actually means. A Cranbourne West specialist explains.

What it is & what it does

A 48-volt mild hybrid adds a small motor-generator (often replacing the alternator) and a compact 48V battery to a normal engine. It can’t drive the car on electricity alone — instead it smooths stop-start, recovers energy when slowing, and gives a small boost, trimming fuel use.

Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo and others fit it widely now — badges like EQ Boost or mHEV.
