Water Dripping Under the Car: When It’s Normal
A puddle under the car in summer panics owners unnecessarily — usually. A Cranbourne West specialist explains the difference.
What it usually means
Clear water dripping near the passenger footwell area with the air-con running is condensation from the A/C evaporator — completely normal, and more of it on humid days means the system is working well. The exhaust also drips clean water when cold — also normal.
The imposters: coloured or slimy fluid (green/orange/pink = coolant, sweet smell), oily drips, or “water” appearing with the A/C off and the car long parked.
What you should do
Dip a finger (carefully) or slide white cardboard under overnight: clear and odourless = relax. Colour, slime or smell = one of our leak guides applies, and the cardboard shows exactly where it fell from.
