What it usually means
A clunk in the last metre of braking is classically: the automatic’s final downshift landing through worn engine/gearbox mounts, brake caliper pins or pads shifting in their carriers as load reverses, or suspension bushes taking up the weight transfer. A brake-pad thump often changes if you stop in reverse.
One soft settle can be normal character; a hardening clunk is wear talking.
