What the designs actually do
Slots wipe the pad face and vent gases under sustained hard braking; drilled holes shed heat and water but concentrate stress (older drilled discs were crack-prone; modern quality ones are better). For track days, towing down ranges or performance driving, they earn their keep.
For normal road driving, a quality plain disc with good pads brakes just as hard — the limit in a single stop is tyre grip, not disc style.
Choosing honestly
Daily driver: quality plain discs and quality pads — quieter, longer-lived, cheaper. Genuine hard use (performance car, track, heavy towing): quality slotted discs make sense. What never makes sense: cheap no-name drilled discs, which combine the cracking risk with poor metallurgy.
Whatever the style, disc quality and correct pads matter far more than the pattern machined into the face.
