How it works — and the method
A manual can be started by using the car’s motion to spin the engine: ignition ON, clutch down, second gear, get rolling (a helper’s push or a gentle slope, walking pace or better), then smoothly release the clutch — the driveline cranks the engine and it fires. Clutch back down immediately and keep it running.
Second gear beats first — less violent, more likely to catch. Autos cannot be push-started at all; their pumps need the engine turning first.
When not to
A flat battery is push-starting’s only honest use case — and even then, modern cars complicate it: catalytic converters dislike unburnt fuel from failed attempts, and some immobilisers and electronics object to low-voltage starts. If the engine cranks fine but won’t fire, pushing fixes nothing — that’s a fuel/spark problem needing diagnosis, not momentum.
And a battery flat enough to need this is telling you something — test it, don’t just recharge and hope.
