The mechanical audit
Weeks out, not days: driveline fluids (transfer case, diffs — the most-skipped items that matter most off-road), cooling system under full inspection (the bush is where marginal radiators declare themselves), belts and hoses squeezed and sighted, battery load-tested and terminals secured, underbody inspection for anything already loose or weeping.
Tyres carry the trip: condition, correct load rating, a full-size spare (space-savers don’t do corrugations) — ideally two for remote work — and the means to reinflate after airing down.
The systems check
Engage 4WD (and low range, and lockers if fitted) before you need them — in a paddock or on gravel, not axle-deep when you discover the actuator seized from disuse. Recovery points inspected (rated points, not tie-downs), recovery gear present and rated, communications sorted for where phones die.
