How to Check Your Brake Fluid Level
Thirty seconds at the reservoir reads the health of your whole brake system. A Cranbourne West brake specialist explains.
The check
Find the brake fluid reservoir (driver’s side firewall area, marked with a brake symbol), and read the level against MIN/MAX without opening the cap — the fluid absorbs moisture from air, so the cap stays on unless you’re topping up with the correct new fluid. Note the colour too: healthy fluid is light amber; dark brown is overdue.
Level drops slowly as pads wear — that’s normal. A sudden or low reading is not.
Reading the answer
At MIN with no warning light: pads may simply be worn — book an inspection. Below MIN or falling fast: possible leak — treat as urgent, and see our red-brake-light guide. Ever-dark fluid: the ~2-yearly flush is overdue regardless of level.
Never top up with the wrong fluid type or from an old opened bottle — both sabotage the system quietly.
