Rain-sensing wipers that wipe a dry screen or ignore a downpour have one usual suspect. A Cranbourne West specialist explains.
What it usually means
The rain sensor is an optical unit reading light scatter through a patch of windscreen behind the mirror — anything disturbing that optical path confuses it: a gel pad gone cloudy or bubbled (very common after windscreen replacement or heat ageing), dirt or coatings on that glass patch, stone chips in the sensor’s zone, or the sensor itself failing.
Erratic behaviour that began right after a new windscreen is the gel-pad/recoupling story almost every time.
What you should do
It’s more than convenience — you drive differently trusting auto wipers, and ones that ignore rain are a safety lapse. The fix is usually the coupling pad or a clean, not the sensor.

Classic — the sensor’s gel coupling to the new glass wasn’t seated. A re-pad fixes it.

Water-repellent coatings over the sensor patch can confuse it — keep that zone bare.
