There’s nothing worse than turning the key in your ignition and hearing... nothing. A dead battery can strike at the most inconvenient times, but thankfully, jump-starting your car is a quick fix you can do yourself if you have the right tools. At StarTech Prestige, we understand that car troubles can be stressful, so we’ve put together this simple guide to help you jump-start your car safely and efficiently.
What You’ll Need:
Jumper cables
Another car with a working battery
Gloves and safety glasses (optional, but recommended)
Step-by-Step Guide to Jump-Starting a Car
Position the Vehicles: Park the cars close enough so the jumper cables can reach both batteries, but make sure the vehicles don’t touch each other. Both cars should be turned off.
Attach the Jumper Cables
Attach the red (positive) cable clamp to the positive terminal (+) of the dead battery.
Attach the other end of the red (positive) clamp to the positive terminal of the working battery.
Attach the black (negative) clamp to the negative terminal (-) of the working battery.
Finally, attach the other end of the black (negative) cable to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car. This could be part of the engine block or chassis.
Start the Working Car: Turn on the car with the working battery and let it run for a few minutes. This allows the dead battery to charge up.
Start the Dead Car: Try starting the car with the dead battery. If it starts, let it run for at least 10-15 minutes to charge the battery. If it doesn’t, you may need to wait a bit longer or check if the cables are connected properly.
Remove the Cables
Remove the cables in reverse order: black from the dead car, black from the working car, red from the working car, and finally red from the dead car.
Make sure the cables don’t touch each other during removal.
Drive and Charge After successfully starting the car, take a drive to allow the alternator to recharge the battery fully.
